The Only Cars America Should Build Pt.1

Over the summer, my cousin and I had a great discussion which I remembered late last night. Why do the Big Three (GM, Ford and Chrysler) have to produce so many cars? I understand the ego trip. I also understand the bragging rights. But when you produce so many useless vehicles (I’m talking about you Saturn Vue), you lose sight of what you’re really good at. In part 1 of this series, I am going to focus on the cars General Motors should continue to produce & develop, while concentrating on its portfolio of American brands (not Opel, Saab, etc.). The ones that don’t make the cut: douse them in gasoline and burn them to a crisp!

  • Chevrolet Corvette – the most underrated supercar in the world; no other car on the planet gives you this much bang for your buck. The car needs some work in the interior department but overall, WOW! Also has a rich racing heritage so what’s not to like about it!
  • Chevrolet Camaro – the newest model is going to take them places. If I simply focus on the V6 variant, the same one found in the Cadillac CTS (below), I would write pages and pages about it’s performance, smooth power delivery, fuel economy, etc… and it goes on and on
  • Chevrolet Volt – car makers today have had to change their outlook on fuel economy standards; this is Chevy’s first attempt at a plug-in hybrid which is  innovative in that it can run for 40 miles on its battery and recharges using the gasoline motor. Pure GENIUS!
  • Chevrolet Silverado – a high quality pickup; doesn’t need so many variants though
  • Cadillac Escalade – all variants included (regular, ESV – Suburban, and EXT – pick up version); regarded as one of the hottest rides by rappers, sports figures and the nouveau riche.
  • Cadillac CTS – influenced by the European formula for efficiency, quality build and performance.
  • GMC – If you are keeping the GMC brand, then just delete all of the Chevy variants… let GMC focus on the trucks and kick @ss at it!

  • Hummer – it’s over people, unless they start building a more fuel efficient variant; can’t see that happening with the sheer size of the truck
  • Saturn – torn really, started off with the right attitude (i.e. fixed pricing, ownership benefits, free donuts at the dealership) but then just took a wrong turn; basically the suits got a hold of it and tried to turn it into Chevy for their year end bonuses
  • Pontiac – will be missed as a brand name but unless they come back with a true Firebird, lay it to rest
  • Buick – one of the best selling cars in China so I guess that may be a reason to keep it; not enough in my eyes
  • Oldsmobile – who????????

Stay tuned for Part 2 where I go to town on Ford, hehehehe!

Very well said. I think they should learn from the Japanese, not just in their engineering, but in their business model. The japs generally have 2 companies, one run-in-the-mill (ex: Honda), and another Luxury make (ex: Acura), albeit both reliable. If the US car companies learned how to build truly luxurious rides, then Id be one in shock. Cadillac is starting to be much better in the luxury segment, with expensive parts and plush interiors. I say nix all brands and keep Chevy, and Cadillac. Two C’s can make a ‘right’.

very interesting elwehbi.. i never thought about it. but now that u mention it, it makes perfect sense! and with the financial difficulties facing US car makers today, they might have to take such measures.
r u getting inside info from the big 3? or do u just possess the power of for-seeing the future? :p

china is a huge market and with so little of its population (in comparison to the rest of the world) actually driving, it has major potential to grow.

cadillac is definitely a keeper, after all its their flagship model…
altho driving a hummer will get you egged for guzzling gas and for having a carbon footprint as big as godzillas, but a friend of mine got egged while driving her Q7 in Paris! go figure… 😉
i agree that variants of the same model should be scrapped.
