Porsche 911 Speedster returns from the dead! (w/video)

Porsche’s 911 Speedster has risen from the dead after a 16 year hiatus. Even more exciting news is that a more powerful turbocharged version could follow the debut soon – the Super Speedster.

The new 911 Speedster receives a 60mm shorter and heavily raked windscreen in place of the standard one used on other 911s. Behind the cabin, a plastic “double-bubble” tonneau cover is used to retain the gone-but-not-forgotten Speedster look. A widened rear, adopted from the Carrera 4S helps the Speedster sit aggressively. The fabric top is operated manually, helping keeping weight figures as low as mechanically possible.

The 3.8-liter engine, used in the recently launched 911 Carrera GTS with 402 bhp and 310 lb-ft, mated to Porsche’s 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox, a locking differential, adaptive damping and carbon-ceramic brakes means this car will definitely be no slouch.

Only 356 911 Speedsters will be built, going on sale in January 2011, with a price tag of approximately $224,ooo US dollars. Good luck trying to get your hands on one. I can see the waiting list already being quite full for this one.
