4 possible World Champions in today’s F1 race in Abu Dhabi. What are the possibilities?

I found a great write-up on the F1 official website which makes great sense of the possible outcome(s) of today’s F1 season finale race in Abu Dhabi, with 2 former champs (Alonso and Hamilton) and 2 teammates (Vettel and Webber) all in contention.  So here’s what each driver will need to happen in order to win.

Fernando Alonso (246 points) will be champion if:

    • he finishes first or second
    • he finishes third, fourth or fifth, and neither Webber nor Vettel win the race
    • he finishes sixth, with Webber no higher than third and Vettel failing to win
    • he finishes seventh or eighth, with Webber no higher than fourth and Vettel failing to win
    • he finishes ninth, with Webber no higher than fifth and Vettel no higher than third
    • he finishes tenth, with Webber no higher than sixth and Vettel no higher than third
    • he fails to score, with Webber no higher than sixth, Vettel no higher than third and Hamilton failing to win
    • if the others don’t score

Mark Webber (238 points) will be champion if:

    • he wins, with Alonso no higher than third
    • he finishes second, with Alonso no higher than sixth and Vettel failing to win
    • he finishes third, with Alonso no higher than seventh and Vettel failing to win
    • he finishes fourth, with Alonso no higher than ninth and Vettel failing to win
    • he finishes fifth, with Alonso no higher than tenth and Vettel failing to win
    • if the others don’t score, Webber must finish fifth or higher to become champion

Sebastien Vettel (231 points) will be champion if:

    • he wins, with Alonso no higher than fifth
    • he finishes second with Alonso no higher than ninth and Webber no higher than fifth
    • if the others don’t score, Vettel must finish second or higher to become champion

Lewis Hamilton (222 points) will be champion if:

    • he wins, with Alonso failing to score, Webber no higher than sixth and Vettel no higher than third.
    • if the others don’t score, Hamilton must win to become champion

It’s also possible that Alonso, Webber and Vettel could finish tied on points at the top with Vettel winning the race, Webber coming in second and Alonso securing fifth. This would give them 256 points each; however, Vettel and Alonso would have a total of five wins each, two second place finishes each and three third place finishes each. This would result in Vettel being crowned the champion because he would have secured three fourth place finishes whereas Alonso only secured two.

Being one of the most exciting seasons I have seen in a long time, it couldn’t be set to end in any better way than this. 4 drivers are in the fight, but only 1 will walk away the new World Champion.
