Launched! Ferrari 458 Italia Spider

Update: A video of the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider’s folding top in action is after the jump.

Just a few days ago, leaked images of the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider were plastered all over the web three weeks prior to the car’s official launch next month at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The 458 Italia Spider features a Ferrari-patented aluminum hardtop in place of the usual fabric roof, a world first for this type of car. Even better is that the new aluminum roof actually weighs 55 pounds less than the F430 Spider’s (its successor) top. In addition, it only takes 14 seconds to completely deploy.

The 458 Spider is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 engine mated to a dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift transmission. 0-100km/h time is expected to be 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 320km/h, making 458 Italia Spider Ferrari’s fastest convertible ever.

Leave it to Ferrari to take an already sexy machine and make it even sexier. The aggressive body lines and curves really flow well together. Pricing has yet to be announced but it’ll definitely be more expensive than the hardtop version.

  4. That hard top that lifts off was a great surprise, I am not a fan of spiders because of the cloth top, now this system is off the hook, it looks great with the top on and off, no sacrifice there !!!

To my knowledge Ferrari in the past spelt “Spyder” with a “Y” and if my memory serves me correctly the 348 had the designation benghth the engine lid on the right corner, futher more, on the 355 onwards they stopped the designation on the car but always refer to their converitables as “SPYDER”

It varies from company to company, but with the press release for the new 458 Italia open-top model, they used the spelling “Spider”. I thought it was supposed to be with a “Y” but it seems that not every company uses that spelling. Now whether they did before or not, I’m unsure.
