Coming at ya! BMW’s new 3 Series arriving soon

Sure to set the internet ablaze, BMW has just unveiled the much-anticipated sixth generation 3 Series. This model covers a crucial segment for BMW, one that could keep it at the top (sales-wise) and ahead of its competitors.

The new 3 Series seems to have grown up clearly resembling its older siblings: the 5 and 7 Series. The car’s nose mimics those of the other models with a more aggressive and sharper front end.

In overall size, the new 3 Series is larger in every way. Wider front and rear tracks, longer wheelbase, more legroom, knee-room, headroom, trunk space… you get the point. And even though the car’s proportions have increased, BMW has managed to keep it 40kgs lighter than its predecessor, a great accomplishment especially in regards to fuel efficiency.

At launch, it’s expected that two engine choices will be available: a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder producing 300hp and 300lb-feet (335i model), as well as a new turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder (328i model) with 240hp and 260lb-ft of torque.

A 6-speed manual transmission and an 8-speed automatic will be offered. The 8-speed can also be upgraded with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters with the Sport Line and M Sport packages. Also available is a new high resolution Head-Up Display system which projects symbols and info onto the windshield, helping drivers keep their eyes focused on the road.

As for the interior, all the important controls are within easy reach with the cockpit angled at 7 degrees towards the driver. Materials fit and finish will definitely be of great quality, as we’ve always come to expect from the brand.

Additional trim options will be available (like example shown above) for those that want to stand out. Pricing has yet to be announced but we expect to get word soon; the car should be ready for sale beginning of 2012.

Ahh, beautiful machine! I am a little thrown off by the front bumper coming up so high, but it presents that excellent profile while meeting the pedestrian safety regulations in europe and the US. I didn’t realize 7 degrees was the magic angle number, good bit of info there!

I agree! BMW has done a great job with the design of the new 3 Series. And I must say: who would have thought that “7 degrees” was the magic number?!?!

What i dont like is BMW turning into a sausage maker like Audi where all their cars look the same. what happened to personality!

I don’t know if I really like the new 3 series. Its too mature looking for my taste. 😛

@qabaq: I think automakers, more so than ever, are trying to ensure that their brand is instantly recognized through their products. From afar, you can’t really tell a Kia from a BMW anymore and I think this could be one of the main reasons why they’re trying to show the genetic tie-in between models.

@Mathai: Another point I’d like to add is the fact that the 3 Series has not only grown in size and looks, it’s price is growing as well. As they continue to push it up-market and move the 3 Series away from the entry-level price point, we’re now seeing new 1 Series and future 2 Series models on their way. So I guess that’s why we’re beginning to feel like the 3 Series is growing up.

BMW aren’t the only ones doing this, Audi and Mercedes are as well.
