BMW joins the 4-door coupé party… finally!

Late to the party, BMW has just introduced its 6 Series Gran Coupé; the Munich-based brand’s answer to the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS. It implements a 4-door design on a 6 Series Coupé body with room for four passengers (five passengers is an option).

The Gran Coupé has a longer and flatter roof structure in comparison to the 6 Series, with the four frameless doors maintaining coupé-like elegance.

Engine choices will range between the turbocharged 3.0-liter straight six with 316bhp and 332lb-ft of torque (640i model) and the turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 packing 444bhp and 479lb-ft (650i model). Whichever engine is chosen, it will be mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It’s also expected that an M6 Gran Coupé will eventually make it to production packing the same 552bhp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 unit found in the 2012 M5.

The interior is an upgraded affair with individually tailored seats for all passengers. Fit and finish, as always with BMWs, will consist of a mix of high-quality materials, with the interior set in a driver-oriented layout.

The rear seats are where the coupé-like character is more defined. The flowing contours of the rear seats are sure to make passengers aware of the car’s sporting nature. BMW has announced that the 6 Series Gran Coupé is set to arrive some time next summer; however, we will see it make an appearance at one of the 2012 / 1st quarter car shows.

Hmm.. looks good but why call it a coupe? That damn CLS started this trend and now suddenly everyone wants to make a ‘4-door coupe’ 😛

This whole 4-door coupe craze doesn’t make sense to me from a naming perspective; however, I definitely appreciate all the models within the segment (CLS, A7, etc.).
