GulfRun 7: It’s a wrap!

It came and went by so fast! With the blink of an eye, GulfRun 7 is now past us and let me tell you: this was their best yet. A few minor tweaks changed everything for me, someone who has been attending the event consecutively for the last few years.

What was the major tweak that hit home? The fact that we were based in the GP pit garages (same ones utilized by Formula One) gave a sense of seriousness and maturity to the event.

The GP pits are a lot more spacious, in comparison to the other pit area. And best of all: they’re spitting distance from the long straight near the Start / Finish line. When any car rolls by at full throttle, you not only hear it, you feel it ring through your soul.

Another great experience for me was the chance to walk into the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East pit garage where there were close to 10 race cars parked. Some were covered, some were exposed.

The Porsche representative allowed me to open the door to one the race cars, and I felt like it almost came off in my hand. The doors weigh a mere 2kg thanks to their carbon fiber construction. Ultra light and super durable.

In between the timing sessions (when GulfRun drivers were out posting their lap times), we got the chance to lounge out behind the pit area. Some food, shisha and good music were part of the relaxation formula.

I then rode out with a friend of mine to the autocross part of the event, which was right outside the GP circuits gates. Cones were set up and instructors were on hand to guide us through the layout of the course, prior to setting any lap times.

It’s amazing how calm and technical you have to be with the steering input and throttle in order to squeeze out a competitive time.

Then it was back to the GP circuit for the last portion of the timing sessions.

A new McLaren MP4-12C graced the event, just parked as eye candy. It was the first time I had ever seen one, other than in a magazine or on TV.

As GulfRun 7 drew to a close, it was time for the last event of the night: the drag races.

A bit of drama unfolded when a Corvette lost some sort of power or blew something in its engine. We weren’t sure what happened but we had to wait a while before the festivities kicked off again.

The temperature dropped quite drastically as darkness set in. Nothing like high-revving machinery and tire smoke under the floodlights to keep us warm… good enough for me!

It was a great event and I’d like to thank the GulfRun boys for their hospitality. Bring on numero 8!!!

Here are a few more pics…

Hope you liked the pics!
