Porsche aims to take Ferrari’s 458 Italia head on!

It has been a long time coming. Since the successful launch of Ferrari’s 458 Italia, I can recall quite a few times rumors surfaced about Porsche’s desire to challenge the Italian automaker’s mid-engined beauty.

It seems that the dream is now a reality as Porsche CEO Matthias Muller has finally confirmed it. Rightfully so, Muller sees a massive gap between the 911 GT2RS and the soon-to-be-released 918 Spyder (approx. $225,000 and $8500,000 respectively). Addressing it with, what they’re calling, the 961 (name not confirmed yet) would be a very interesting proposition.

The 961 could be blessed with a lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque chassis, as well as the 570bhp 4.6-litre V8 engine used in the 918 Spyder.

One question: with a projected price of approx. $400,000, wouldn’t the Porsche 961 cost significantly more than a 458?
