Launched! 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

I thought I really wanted the C6 Corvette badly… but damn, do I want the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette even more! Although this could be the most controversial Corvette of our time, this thing simply looks amazing.

One thing you can’t argue is that the C7 Stingray draws inspiration from some of the fastest sports cars out there. The front end has a bit of Ferrari in it. The side vents placed behind the front fenders scream “Skyline GT-R”. The double-bubble carbon fiber roof is a concept currently used on the BMW M6. But if that’s the kind of competition the Corvette’s aiming for, then I’m all for it.

Some may disagree on the rear end’s design, but I think it works well with the car especially since it’s a functional design. According to Chevrolet’s press release, the “airflow through the differential and transmission heat exchangers exit through the aircraft-inspired taillamp vents and lower-rear fascia air outlets”. Once up close and personal, I’m sure many will be converted fans.

The new Corvette Stingray will have approx. 450hp and 450lb.-ft. of torque, nailing 0-100km/h in less than four seconds. The use of lightweight materials such as the carbon fiber hood and roof, carbon-nano composite technology used for the underbody panels, lighter-density Sheet Molded Compound body panels and a lighter frame (45kg less) than the one used in the C6 should make the new Vette a modern-day legend.

The interior is definitely miles better than the C6’s, but I’ll wait to actually sit in one before passing judgement. The Stingray comes with a fully-wrapped interior, with choices of materials ranging from Napa leather, aluminum, carbon fiber and micro-suede. Adding to the cockpit’s high-end racer feel are configurable display screens and a heads-up display unit.

I’ll be perfectly honest here and say that I haven’t covered even half of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette’s changes and improvements. And that should be a complete testament as to how different and better the C7 ‘Vette Stingray will be than its predecessor.

I may have been disappointed by the patent drawings, but I’ll admit that I’m very impressed by this despite it being a tad overstyled in places and the vents being a bit fussy. It’s already stirring up controversy since the ‘Vette is supposed to scream “AMERICA!” but instead has more international influence and appeal. With regards to the rear, I’m actually a fan despite its obvious Camaro influence [not a bad thing]; the whole composition looks sharp, lean and futuristic.

I’ll have to wait to sit and feel the interior to see how far build quality has come but so far, this is a win, is a splendid evolution of the C6 and honestly blows the SRT Viper out of the water when it comes to pure looks between the American automotive icons. Bring it on.

I too am smitten by the design departure taken. I think Chevrolet have done a fantastic job!

As for the Stingray name, I participated in a random poll yesterday and I agree with the majority who said that the “Stingray” name should have been reserved for a special edition model of the C7 and not a mass production one.

Still, no reason for me to hate. I WANT ONE!
